People are weird.
I am a part of the group of Gen Xers who literally went to school with the students at Hillman. On Thursday nights, studying came to a halt for A Different World. It hit differently for us because we, too, were in college—navigating school, life, and the real world. We were growing up together.
A Different World was our world … literally.
So when I see posts about Jasmine Guy and comments on how old Whitley looks in the reboot, I think about it differently.
People are weird.
This is my Diamond Jubilee year. I’m thinking about all the fantabulous women who have crossed into this milestone. Aging hits differently now. The elders used to laugh when young people called them old, and I understand why.
In the blink of an eye, they already knew,
Someone will be saying the same thing to you.
Everyone grows.
Everyone ages.
I’d rather get older and still be here than consider the alternative.
That’s why I love Audre Lorde’s quote
"As we move toward creating a society within which we can each flourish, ageism is another distortion of relationship which interferes with our vision."
Gray hair is a crown of splendor. I love seeing Whitley and Dwayne Wayne and the original cast with salt-and-pepper hair and laugh lines. I see life lived and wisdom gained over the decades. And it is absolutely beautiful.
Just like we went to college together, we’ve continued to grow up together.
And we’re still here.
